The
Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1938)
This is the sequel to the highly popular 1934 film, which
starred Leslie Howard. It's regarded by some critics as
the film that is closest in spirit to Orzcy's book.In this
follow-up, Howard takes on the directing role ... leaving
the acting to Barry Barnes, who is sufficiently foppish
as Sir Percy. The plot centers around the French revolutionary
Robespierre vowing to extract revenge on the Scarlet Pimpernel.
|
Robespierre is angry that Sir Percy Blakeney has been
helping the aristocracy escape from the guillotine and
to take his revenge Robespierre kidnaps Sir Percy's wife
and takes her to France. As you would expect, the Pimpernel
rescues her and they escape to England. The film features
a very young James Mason in a minor support tole.
